First, we chat about the latest CPI numbers. As I told Waj, it’s usually intellectually dishonest to blame a president for trends in the macroeconomy, but today’s inflation story is quite different. We can point to two specific policy choices – the tariff war and the war with Iran – that have been clear drivers of the rise in both headline and core inflation.
We also get into the latest news out of the Fed, including two “red flag” moments from Kevin Warsh’s confirmation hearing. Fed independence is under real threat, and Warsh’s willingness to prioritize the president’s feelings over truth is providing some “nightmare fuel,” given Trump’s desire for dramatic interest rate cuts even as inflation rises.
