Dear Professor Wolfers. Excellent content and sober analysis. As the Democratic leadership is pondering next steps, the Roberts court’s decision on Citizens United is screaming for reversal, as your article addresses, or perhaps implies. The “independent” judiciary has demonstrated in the past that they are not above stating positions on matters beyond judicial review and will be swayed by public opinion. Thank you for your tremendous work.
Justin is amazing. It’s gutsy of him to say what he said. As I said, I found it scary and depressing. Sometimes I have a hard time facing up to something. This is one of those times.
Interesting to see how your analysis plays out JW. It may take a bit, but I think the market will continue to be unkind to him (and everybody apparently … we’re in correction territory)
Corporate Political Action Committees (PACs) funded by employees of Tesla and SpaceX do routinely donate to Democratic candidates.
The SpaceX PAC has historically balanced its giving to protect the company's multi-billion-dollar aerospace and defense contracts: in recent election cycles, the SpaceX employee PAC has given roughly 37% to 40% of its candidate funding to Democrats, with the remaining 60% to 63% going to Republicans.
Because tech sector workforces generally skew progressive, individual Tesla employee contributions heavily favor Democrats. In federal filing data, Democratic candidates—including Vice President Kamala Harris—regularly receive hundreds of thousands of total dollars combined from individuals employed by Tesla. During the 2024 cycle, accounting for 78.58% of all political money originating from people employed by the company went to Democrats.
The conclusion is while Musk personally stopped giving to democratic candidates since 2022 his employees at Tesla and Spacex do donate to democratic candidates
There is old Jewish saying that if we want to dance at a wedding the musicians must be paid first.
Prof Wolfers, you could do a follow-on piece about how much Brin spent in California to avoid the $12B the CA billionaire wealth tax would have cost him…and it worked. That clearly illustrates the pivotal nature and cost to the rest of the community of these amounts of concentrated wealth and donations in politics

This was scary and depressing.
This is one of the most critical questions of this era. I’ve been screaming about the likelihood of this outcome since the Reagan years.
