What a lot of people fail to remember is that their ancestors were immigrants too. And they wouldn't be here if people like them had been in charge when their grandparents, etc. came here. So much hypocrisy.
Professor, the answer to the increase is all about white supremacy and the so called so called Christian ethos of America. For some reason this thinking seems to be passed from generation to generation.
I'm sad to say that there is some of this thinking here in Canada too, among older citizens. It manifests as complaints about providing social assistance to newly arrived people, not so much about their ethnicity or skillsets. A case in point is the recent Alberta referendum that had many less publicized questions about restricting and controlling immigration. There are similar issues wherever there is a white majority in the population. Brexit is another example.
All of this is in the face of the facts that you laid out, the taxes paid, the purchases made and talent brought to society.
I see this changing in the younger half of the population here in Canada. My kids, children of boomers grew up in a multicultural environment, went to multicultural schools and have a number of non white friends. I hate writing it this way, they are just friends.
So there is hope, at least here in Canada, which helps protect our core values of respecting others, while making a happier, productive and growing society.
I watched the video. So glad you identified Elon Musk as a Nazi. I mean, the man spent many millions his own money promoting the AfD in Germany last year, spent several weeks with JD Vance campaigning for the AfD, went around doing his "Heil Hitler" salute everywhere he went, told audiences the time had come to be proud of Adolf Hitler - so thank you for saying what more Americans needs to hear, that Elon Musk is a Nazi. (And as the son of an immigrant from Poland, who grew up with an immigrant step-mother from France, and who fell in love with an immigrant woman from Hong Kong, thank you for supporting immigrants so coherently).
The other problem with the “illegal” argument is (as you know personally) the legal process is confusing, time-consuming, arbitrary and often expensive. And it’s getting worse. There just isn’t a reasonably accessible legal process at this point.
“I didn’t mean that bloke”…to me that sums it up. It feels like people (especially on the right?) don’t do abstract thinking very well. They don’t live in the gray. We saw this with Covid as well…I had some conservative family members who thought the whole thing made up, or just a bad flu until people they knew died of it.

You should order up one of your immigrant T-shirts with the additional lettering on the back: “If you don’t think I am legal, ICE, see my lawyer.“
