The first time the British saw a platypus, they thought it was a hoax. A mammal that lays eggs, carries venom, and finds it way through murky waters with a special sixth sense. It doesn’t follow the rules — and yet it’s thriving.
Here’s what economics has taught me: the world rarely follows the rules either. Your life is shaped by economic currents you’ll never see. A price can know things a thousand experts don’t. And good intentions can lead to bad outcomes.
The people who understand all this — who really understand it — they make better decisions. In their careers, their finances, their relationships, and their communities.
I have loved every minute I’ve spent teaching economics to university students. But I also know that too many people never get access to these ideas — and they pay the price for it.
And that’s why I’m starting Platypus Economics. Because economic literacy isn’t a luxury — it’s a necessity. And because everyone, not just the privileged few, deserves the tools to see the world clearly.
I’m Justin Wolfers and welcome to Platypus Economics.
